Men & Menopause
Welcome!
I want to assist you in working out what’s happening and what these changes mean for the women in your life – and, by extension, you!
I also work with men in generalised counselling, details of which can be accessed here
Menopause Aware Mission
This is an area specially designed for you to explore more of what these life stages can mean, with particular emphasis on Mental Health and General Wellbeing – handy really, given that this is my area of expertise and passion!
I’m part of #menopauserevolution that seeks to address, challenge, and change current practices, and to normalise and celebrate what has historically been taboo and trivialised in our westernised culture whilst empowering women to take control… and help themselves and others in the process.
Signs and Symptoms
Women typically begin to experience symptoms of PM around the age of 40 onwards, although this can vary by several years in either direction. Think about the woman or women in your life that are approximately 40 and older. Do you recognise any of the symptoms given in the PM and M visuals below?
Also, please try to imagine how this might feel if it was you? Especially if you’d not really experience any of these things previously in life, and had little to no idea any of this was going to happen!
Perimenopause:
Menopause:
The Rest-of-Your-Life (RoYL©)
Once a woman has journeyed through Menopause and has had more than 12 consecutive months without a period (naturally) she is deemed to be post-menopausal. This seems to suggest that everything is finished and over, but that’s sadly far from true for many women. That’s why I refer to it as RoYL©, as women need ongoing, specific support for the rest of life too!
IMenopause and beyond (RoYL©) – Some Stats:
1 billion women are expected to be in menopause by 2025 with around 70% of those experiencing
significant and quite often debilitating symptoms. [as quoted by Dr Wendy Sweet, Phd]
There have also been significant changes to what I refer to as the Rest-of-Your-Life (RoYL©)which will have a greater impact than at any time in the history of humankind:
The global population of postmenopausal women is growing. In 2021, women aged 50 and over accounted for 26% of all women and girls globally. This was up from 22% 10 years earlier. Additionally, women are living longer. Globally, a woman aged 60 years in 2019 could expect to live on average another 21 years. Menopause can offer an important opportunity to reassess one’s health, lifestyle, and goals. [World Health Organization]
General Medical practice is doing its best, but knowledge and understanding of these significant life changes and challenges is leaving millions of women believing that they just have to “put up with it”…”it’s just menopause”….or are being given outdated information and interventions.
As a mental health professional specialising in PM/M/(RoYL©) I’m extremely alert to the increasing number of women who are often being diagnosed with anxiety, depression and even suicidal ideation without appropriate age-related understanding, support and interventions.
I’m part of a #menopauserevolution that seeks to address, challenge, and change current practices, and to normalise and celebrate what has historically been taboo and trivialised in our westernised culture whilst empowering women to take control… and help themselves and others in the process.
Taking it further
Book a Therapy Session:
If you would like to book a therapy session
to explore your journey as the partner,
friend, father, son, co-worker of someone struggling with Perimenopause/Menopause/
Rest-of-Your-Life you can do that here
Seek Support:
If your loved one is one of the approximately 70% of women experiencing uncomfortable
to debilitating effects of PM/M/RoYL© or you think that what she’s been already told isn’t
helping, please don’t let her suffer in silence. Encourage her to seek support, and to
access this area here on my website
Take Control:
If your loved one is now in the life stage that I’m referring to as RoYL©there can still be ongoing challenges even into our 80s and beyond, so please don’t let her settle for just “getting on with it”. Hopefully, she’ll get to be on planet earth for many decades to come. This is a very long time to navigate the potential health challenges of being a woman of mature vintage. Enough is enough, encourage her to take control and be empowered in her body, mind and spirit.
If you have a question or comments, you can do that using the contact form below.
